Emigrating to a new country, finding life-long love on the way and helping build two schools in Gisborne are some of the experiences Bert Barnes has had in his 100 years of life.

Mr Barnes celebrated his centenary surrounded by family and friends at Kiri Te Kanawa retirement village.

Mr Barnes was born on October 18, 1919 in Plumstead, London near Woolwich Arsenal.
